Mother’s Day baking recipe ideas
As Mother’s Day approaches, we find ourselves in a heartfelt celebration of the incredible women who have shaped our lives. Whether it’s your mum, a mother figure, or the cherished memories of a mum who’s no longer with us, this day is a tribute to their unwavering love and nurturing spirit.
When did the tradition of Mother’s Day begin?
Mother’s Day celebration goes back as far as the Ancient Greeks when they celebrated Rhea (Mother of the Gods and Goddesses) every spring. The Romans also celebrated a mother Goddess, Cybele, every March as far back as 250BC. In the 16th Century a special day was dedicated to giving thanks and honouring the Virgin Mary (Mother Mary). This tradition continued for many centuries, however, by 1935 it had started to decrease in popularity in Europe. Until World War II. In particular, The Americans and Canadians celebrated Mother’s Day during the war, feeling a crucial need to give thanks to their mothers whilst children were away at war. The British and other Europeans followed their comrades and they too gave thanks to their mothers and, since then, it has held a special place in the UK calendar.
How does food help us come together on Mother’s Day?
As with any other celebration or festival, food always seems to play a major role in bringing the family together. In the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day, often referred to as “Mothering Sunday,” holds a unique place in the hearts of families. While the origins of Mothering Sunday can be traced back to the Christian tradition of returning to one’s “mother church” and later evolved into a day to honour mothers, it has become a day for showing appreciation to all maternal figures. On this special occasion, families come together to pamper their mums with heartfelt cards, flowers, and thoughtful gifts. Many households indulge in a delightful Sunday roast, a cherished culinary tradition, as a way to honour and spoil their mothers. It’s a day filled with love, gratitude, and cherished moments, a time to express our deep affection for the remarkable women who have played such a vital role in our lives.
